WHAT IS THIS ROLE DESIGNED TO DO?

As a Lead Engineer, you are responsible for leading a squad of 4 to 8 engineers, taking ownership of key product features through all the phases of the software development cycle, working alongside one of our Product Managers.

You’ll have excellent working knowledge of most aspects of software development, from designing, coding, testing to devops, and be proficient in at least two of these domains.

You will be comfortable working side by side with product managers, designers, and other internal teams, taking decisions together in order to quickly deliver valuable working software to Shippit customers.  

You’ll also take an active part in our journey towards micro-services, working alongside our architect and infrastructure leads to deploy our new features outside of our Rails monolith.

To succeed in this role you will be agile and retrospective, and not afraid to identify what we’re doing wrong so we can fix it, and what we're doing right so we can make it even better. 

The Lead Engineer participates in all phases of the software development cycle, including analysis, design, development, debugging, testing, and deployments.

HOW WILL THIS ROLE IMPROVE THE EXPERIENCE OF OUR PEOPLE OR CUSTOMERS?

As part of the engineering team you will have a direct impact on our customers. Our cross-functional teams own new features, maintenance and monitoring in their business area,  shipping  code several times a day.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Able to build an end to end approach to address complex features 
  • Fully capable of taking key features from concept to shipping with a team of developers.
  • Can provide material feedback on the work of junior and senior developers.
  • Deep expertise within at least one or two programming environments.
  • Strong experience in multiple technologies and proficiency in at least two areas.
  • Understands the technical and business larger picture around their work, seeks clarifications from product managers and is able to negotiate trade-offs and alternative options based on planning and existing code bases constraints.
  • Proactively suggests and apply corrective actions on the existing code bases.
  • Can build a strategy to build and maintain quality in your area of ownership.
  • Own initiatives from design to deployment and support, with planning awareness.
  • Able to assume a first level of people management responsibility, running 1:1’s, provide feedback in the performance management process and identify areas of improvement opportunities.
  • Participate and contribute to the team's life, attend learning events and propose topics of interest.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • Usually at least 8 years of experience being a professional programmer in several technical domains with deep knowledge of multiple technologies and a proficiency in at least one area, within Ruby, Javascript/TypeScript/Node.js, Go, Java. 
  • Ability to mentor and train other developers on the team, including seniors.
  • Experience with Object-Oriented programming.
  • Strong problem-solving capabilities.
  • Strong communication skills
  • Eager to learn from and share knowledge with others
  • Enjoys analyzing complex problems to find simple solutions
  • Excited to work closely with product, design, and users with empathy and kindness

Desirable experience & skills:

  • Experience with Agile and Extreme Programming practices.
  • Experience with Cloud-based development and devops practices (AWS, Terraform etc).
