Heart of the Role

Oneflare and its associated businesses are in the midst of a significant transition to a business-focused tech company. 

 

We are looking for someone amazing to take on the role of a Backend Team Lead to help guide and mentor the Backend team of 6 Rails developers, at various stages in their careers. 

 

Oneflare runs 100% on Kubernetes in Docker-based deployments with a full CI/CD pipeline to support it. We have a diverse codebase of a number of Ruby on Rails systems, React.js/Knockout frontends, multiple native mobile apps and emerging Golang based microservices. We have a strong DevOps culture led by a dedicated Site Reliability Engineering that spreads knowledge to our developers to take control of their own infrastructure. 

 

We are looking to focus on architecture improvements, optimisations and continue to support our high-velocity feature development. Working in agile sprints, candidates should be passionate about scrum processes and enjoy working in cross-functional teams aligned on delivery. 

 

As a Team Leader, you will use your expertise in software development and knowledge of industry best practices to develop high-level quality code and ensure that your team are constantly improving and are always challenged. Additionally, you will need to understand the business domain to coordinate system technical architecture between our frontend and mobile teams that consume the APIs that your team will produce.

 

You will often oversee projects and may specialise in a particular area of software development. You have intimate knowledge of failure, have written code both under, and over-designed, and have seen both fail. 

You are reflective about the things you and your team do, evaluating the successes, and failures when approaching problems with intellectual honesty. 

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage a team of 6 direct reports, split between 3 cross-functional squads
  • Be responsible for major software architecture decisions
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of the development process
  • Shows an appetite for owning responsibility for technical decisions and direction for many projects and teams
  • Responsible for leading technical projects through the entire software development life cycle
  • Implementing best-practice quality assurance strategies
  • Perform code reviews and provide guidance for the team
  • Take responsibility for deployment successes and failures

Skills and Experience

  • Incredibly strong knowledge of the Ruby on Rails framework
  • Experience managing teams of developers
  • Excellent communication
  • Extensive knowledge of the software development lifecycle
  • Strong knowledge of computer languages such as Ruby, Javascript and Golang
  • Strong architecture principles including microservices and event-driven systems
  • A focus on continuous integration and   development
  • Worked with Kubernetes, Docker and Continuous Integration and Deployment pipelines
  • Able to leverage asynchronous programming, queuing, caching, logging, security and persistence when appropriate
  • Strong attention to detail and able to approach problems in a logical and structured method
  • Ability and desire to learn new tools and technologies, and work independently
  • Knowledge of HTML5/CSS3, Javascript, and native app development highly regarded
